Tikhanovskaya welcomes Putin's, other leaders' commitment to settlement in Belarus

BERLIN. Oct 7 (Interfax) - Former Belarusian presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya has welcomed mediating efforts by leaders of other countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, toward settling the political crisis in Belarus.

"The political crisis in Belarus is for the Belarusians to settle, not for Moscow. Putin is not supposed to decide on the future of the Belarusian people, but Svetlana would like to invite him to mediate in negotiations, along with representatives of other countries," Tikhanovskaya's campaign staff told Interfax on Wednesday.

Tikhanovskaya, who is staying in Berlin now, has asked the German authorities to help the Belarusians who suffered while the law enforcement dispersed unsanctioned protest demonstrations. "This concerns assistance in the recuperation of those injured and support for students and independent journalists," it said.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier mentioned "an assistance package for a democratic Belarus," the staff said.
