BISHKEK. Oct 8 (Interfax) - Thousands of neighborhood watch guards have stood up for the capital of Kyrgyzstan, the leader of one such group, Daniyar Terbishaliyev, told Interfax on Thursday.
"Over 10,000 neighborhood watch guards are protecting Bishkek from looting and riots," Terbishaliyev said.
They will be patrolling the city streets at nighttime as well, he said.
"The people have lined up perimeters around all government buildings, city administrations, shopping centers and enterprises. A mobile street patrol team comprises 500 watch guards," Terbishaliyev said.
The police are working with neighborhood watch groups round the clock, the city police said.
"Currently, law enforcement are working together with neighborhood watch guards round the clock. They are providing security for buildings, shopping centers, private businesses and enterprises day and night," the Bishkek police said.
Some supermarkets have banned alcohol sale after 6 p.m. because of a high demand for the product.
In Osh, demonstrators supporting the president have left the central square where the city police and neighborhood watch guards carried out a garrison lineup.
