Certain political forces plotting mass unrest in Kyrgyzstan - security service

BISHKEK. Oct 9 (Interfax) - Kyrgyz law enforcement agencies have been placed on high alert after receiving information that large-scale unrest with the use of firearms is being plotted in Kyrgyzstan, the press service of the Kyrgyz State Committee for National Security said on Friday.

"Information currently being received by the Kyrgyz State Committee for National Security indicates that certain forces are trying to organize large-scale disturbances with the use of firearms in order to accomplish their political goals," it said.

In light of this, personnel of the State Committee for National Security and the Interior Ministry have been put on high alert, the press service said.

Additionally, an interdepartmental taskforce has been formed to record and crack down on unlawful activities, contain mass unrest, and detain their organizers, it said.

"The information available gives every reason to presume that in the current situation organization of different rallies may provoke irreparable heavy consequences for which legislation envisages criminal liability in the form of a lengthy prison term," it said.

The Kyrgyz opposition and supporters of the incumbent authorities are holding rival rallies in the capital Bishkek and the southern city of Osh. The country has been in political crisis since October 5.
