Atambayev's party qualifies shooting at his car as assassination attempt

BISHKEK. Oct 9 (Interfax) - The Social-Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan (SDPK) has confirmed that former President Almazbek Atambayev survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Bishkek.

"An assassination attempt has been waged on the ex-president of Kyrgyzstan. Almazbek Atambayev was not harmed," Kunduz Joldubayeva of the SDPK said on Friday.

The party plans to make an official statement later in the day, she said.

Joldubayeva later posted a video on a social network in which Atambayev claimed that someone shot live rounds at his car.

"These are live rounds. Can a rubber bullet really pierce the armor of a Mercedes?" Atambayev said.

Asked by Joldubayeva whether someone really tried to assassinate him, Atambayev replied, "But why do you think they would've shot live rounds at my car?"

As was reported earlier, an unidentified shooter fired several shots at Atambayev's car during a rally in Bishkek on Friday.
