Former deputy head of Russian National Guard suspected of fraud - source

MOSCOW. Oct 22 (Interfax) - Former deputy director of the Russian National Guard Sergei Mileiko has been detained on suspicion of fraud, an informed source told Interfax.

"Mileiko has been detained as part of an investigation into fraud," the source said.

The inquiry against Mileiko was opened at the initiative of the Russian National Guard following an internal check, he said.

The Kommersant newspaper first reported Mileiko's detention on Wednesday. According to Kommersant, a fraud case was opened.

Russian National Guard spokesman Valery Gribakin, in turn, told Interfax that an internal inquiry had been conducted in relation to Mileiko.

"In light of the latest media reports dealing with former deputy director of Rosgvardiya Sergei Mileiko, we assert that Mileiko has not held any high-ranking posts in the federal service since the summer of 2019. The service's internal security department once conducted an inquiry in relation to him, after which a decision was made to relieve Sergei Mileiko of his duties and to dismiss him. He was dismissed in the summer of 2019," Gribakin said.

Mileiko held senior positions in the Internal Troops of the Russian Interior Ministry and served as the deputy presidential envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District in 2014. He held the post of Russian National Guard deputy director from 2017 and until July 2019.
