Putin: important to preserve UN, UNSC, right to veto as main mechanisms for maintaining int'l security

MOSCOW. Oct 22 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he does not share the view that existing international institutions must be overhauled, adding that it is important to keep the United Nations, the UN Security Council and the right to veto enjoyed by its members, as key mechanisms for maintaining international security.

Speaking at a plenary session of the Valdai discussion club, Putin noted that he cannot agree with the view expressed by some experts saying that existing international entities need to be fully rebuilt or must otherwise be abandoned as obsolete. "On the contrary, it is important to preserve all the main mechanisms for maintaining international security, which have proven their effectiveness. This is the UN, the Security Council and its permanent members' right to veto," Putin said.
