Under Biden disarmament talks to proceed easier - Gorbachev

MOSCOW. Nov 9 (Interfax) - With Joe Biden's win at the U.S. presidential election, extending the New START Treaty for five years became possible, former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev told Interfax on Sunday.

Biden will take a reasonable stance on the issues of this treaty, he said.

Gorbachev described Biden as "a worthy person," explaining that he has drawn this conclusion based on his personal impressions from the meetings with him.

He said he hopes that "it will be easier now" with respect to the disarmament issues. "Of course, the Democrats (in the United States) will be cautious, and we too. However, the caution should not hamper real talks between the two parties," Gorbachev said.
