Russian peacekeepers arrive in Karabakh's Stepanakert, begin deploying 4 observation posts - Russian Defense Ministry

MOSCOW. Nov 13 (Interfax) - Units of the 15th separate peacekeeping brigade taking part in the peacekeeping operation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone covered more than 100 kilometers, passing through Goris, Sus, Geytala, the Lysogorsky mountain pass, and the south-western outskirts of Shusha, and began deploying four observation posts in the South zone, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday.

"The convoy includes armored personnel carriers, vehicles, and logistics supplies which were earlier delivered by [Ilyushin] Il-76 military-transport planes to the Erebuni airfield from the Russian Federation," it said.

Units of the peacekeeping contingent have taken control of the Lachin Corridor and a road section between Lachin and the Lysogorsky State Farm, placing six provisional observation posts there, the ministry said.

In all, ten observation posts have been deployed along the line of contact in Nagorno-Karabakh and in the Lachin Corridor.

"They will be in charge of gathering information on cases of ceasefire violations, promptly conveying this data to the peacekeeping forces' command, maintaining transit security of transport, and suppressing unlawful actions against the civilian population. This will contribute to the soonest possible restoration of peaceful life and return of refugees" it said.

Russian military police units will also operate as part of the peacekeeping contingent dispatched to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. They will be responsible for carrying out patrols along the contact line and escorting convoys and cargoes.

"The peacekeeping contingent consists of servicemen serving under a contract who have received special training in conducting peacekeeping missions, including analysis in and compliance with the norms of international humanitarian law in armed conflicts," the ministry said.

Units of the 15th separate motorized rifle (peacekeeping) brigade of the Central Military District form the core of the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh.

As reported earlier, Russia's peacekeeping contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh will include 1,960 servicemen, 90 armored personnel carriers, and 380 vehicles and pieces of other special-purpose hardware.
