MINSK. Nov 19 (Interfax) - Belarusian opposition organization People's Anti-Crisis Administration has prepared a number of proposals for the European Union to extend its sanctions on Belarus.
"The People's Anti-Crisis Administration proposals to the countries of the EU are the following: to impose an embargo on the export and import of weapons and to declare a moratorium on the provision of financial assistance to the current authorities with the exception of humanitarian projects (for instance, the efforts to counter Covid-19)," the People's Anti-Crisis Administration said in a statement on its official Telegram channel on Wednesday.
The opposition also proposes significantly expanding the sanctions list to include "those implicated in the rigging of elections, repression, violence and torture of civilians. These are members of electoral commissions, public officials, the chief executives of enterprises, deans of higher educational establishments, Belarusian journalists, judges, investigators, prosecutors, and law enforcement officers."
"It is precisely their activity which is aggravating the humanitarian crisis in the country," the statement said.
Members of the Belarusian democratic movement will continue to propose extending the sanctions lists as they are being updated, the statement said.
It is also proposed to impose sanctions on individuals and companies "which fund the activities of the current state authorities."
Additionally, the People's Anti-Crisis Administration suggests addressing a number of international financial institutions, such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the International Finance Corporation, the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Investment Bank, the Nordic Investment Bank, the Eurasian Development Bank, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank in order to "impose a temporary moratorium on any loans, credit guarantees, insurance, financing, refinancing, or any other financial assistance, except for humanitarian projects (for instance, efforts to counter Covid-19)."
The opposition also proposes setting up a high-level mission of EU and Russian representatives to settle the crisis in Belarus.
Member of the Coordination Council presidium Pavel Latushko together with representatives of Belarusian democratic political forces announced the establishment of the People's Anti-Crisis Administration on October 28.
