BLAGOVESHCHENSK. Nov 19 (Interfax) - The Second Eastern District Military Court in the Russian city of Chita has formed a jury to try army conscript Ramil Shamsutdinov, who opened fire on his fellow servicemen in the Trans-Baikal Territory in October 2019, killing eight, the man's lawyer Ruslan Nagiyev told Interfax on Thursday.
"The jury has been formed: eight regular jurors and four backup jurors. Out of all the candidates, two were dismissed - one by the defense team and another by the prosecution. We will start to hear the case on Monday," he said.
On October 25, 2019, Shamsutdinov opened fire on his fellow servicemen in the Trans-Baikal Territory, killing eight and injuring another two. He had been drafted for military service from the Tyumen region in the summer of 2019. He was charged with murder and attempted murder. Shamsutdinov himself says that the reason for his actions was hazing by commanders and fellow soldiers. In August 2020, his lawyers submitted a request for a trial by jury, which was granted.
