France takes biased stance on Nagorno-Karabakh - Azerbaijani parliament speaker

BAKU. Nov 20 (Interfax) - The stance taken by France after the beginning of hostilities in the Karabakh conflict zone on September 27 contravenes its mandate of a co-chair country of the OSCE Minsk Group, Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Sahiba Gafarova said on Friday.

"France took a biased stance from day one. The French Senate proposed considering a statement on the illegal regime in the Azerbaijani territory. In my opinion, such actions of France are at odds with its international obligations," Gafarova said at a parliament meeting on Friday.

Parliament deputies criticized the French stance on Nagorno-Karabakh. Some deputies proposed that the Azerbaijani ambassador be recalled from Paris for consultations and that economic and political relations with France be limited.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in separate phone calls with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Thursday that the end of war in Nagorno-Karabakh could help resume talks between the conflicting sides and the return of refugees.
