Trial of conscript Shamsutdinov who shot and killed fellow servicemen begins in Transbaikal Territory

BLAGOVESHCHENSK. Nov 23 (Interfax) - On Monday, the 2nd Eastern District Military Court in Chita started hearing the case of conscript Ramil Shamsutdinov who shot and killed eight fellow servicemen in a military unit in the Transbaikal Territory in October 2019, a court representative told Interfax.

"All jury members are in place. The hearing has begun," the source said.

On October 25, 2019, Shamsutdinov opened fire on his fellow servicemen in the Transbaikal Territory, killing eight and injuring another two. He had been drafted for military service from the Tyumen region in the summer of 2019. He was charged with murder and attempted murder. Shamsutdinov himself says that the reason for his actions was hazing by commanders and fellow soldiers. In August 2020, his lawyers submitted a request for a trial by jury, which was granted.

The jury, eight members and four backups, was formed on the second attempt on November 19. Two jury candidates were rejected, one by the defense and the other by the prosecution.
