Abkhazia expects Dec round of Geneva Discussions to be substantive, to contribute to peace in region

SUKHUM. Nov 25 (Interfax) - President of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania and the co-chairs of the Geneva International Discussions (GID) on Security and Stability in the South Caucasus - Cihan Sultanoglu (United Nations), Toivo Klaar (European Union), and Rudolf Michachka (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) - discussed the upcoming GID round and the Covid-19 situation in the republic.

"We are eager to build and develop our state. We want peace on our soil. And I hope that you will support us in it and that the Geneva Discussions will be a serious instrument for achieving a lasting peace in Abkhazia and across the region," Bzhania was quoted by his press service as saying.

Hopefully, the upcoming round of GID "will be more substantive and will help strengthen peace in Abkhazia and the Caucasus region as a whole," he said.

The latest events in Nagorno-Karabakh "require everyone to be more vigilant and more responsible," Bzhania said.

According to the press service, the participants in the meeting discussed the upcoming round of the Geneva International Discussions, the situation surrounding the spread of coronavirus in Abkhazia and measures to counter this disease.

The diplomats arrived in Abkhazia to discuss the agenda of the next round of GID due to take place on December 10-11, the press service said.

The Geneva International Discussions, launched in 2008, remain the only platform for Georgia's dialogue with South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The main objective of these talks, which also involve Russian and U.S. representatives and co-chairs from the UN, the EU, and the OSCE, is to secure an agreement between Tskhinval and Tbilisi, Sukhum and Tbilisi, banning the use of military force.
