NEW YORK, UN. Nov 26 (Interfax) - The unilateral restrictive measures adopted by the United States and the European Union pose a threat to peace and security worldwide, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya at a UN Security Council informal meeting dealing with illegal unilateral sanctions.
The meeting was convened at the initiative of Russia, China, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Niger, and the South African Republic.
"It is the illegal restrictions and coercive measures by the U.S. and the EU that indeed represent a serious threat to international peace and security, aggravate humanitarian situation from Middle East to Africa, Latin America and Europe," Nebenzya said.
In this context, he called on the meeting participants to give their attention to Russian President Vladimir Putin's initiative on creating so-called "green corridors - free from trade wars and sanctions, primarily for essential goods, foods, medicines and personal protective equipment needed to fight the pandemic."
"As a follow-up to this call, member states along with relevant UN agencies could consider our initiative on monitoring by the UN system [...] over the impact of [unilateral coercive measures] UCMs on post-COVID recovery," he said.
Nebenzya also said that it is necessary to think about how to help partners who assist with deliveries of humanitarian aid and encounter multiple obstacles because of such unilateral measures.
"The UN system cannot and should not stay ignorant to numerous appeals by the UN secretary-general and other UN high-level officials on lifting the UCMs," he said.
