Navalny's remarks on radio being probed for public calls for extremist activity - source

MOSCOW. Dec 1 (Interfax) - Law enforcement agencies are probing whether remarks made by Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny may contain public calls for overthrowing the political system in Russia, an informed source told Interfax.

"A probe into Alexei Navalny's remarks he made during a broadcast on the Ekho Moskvy radio station on April 27 this year was opened yesterday. In particular, he expressed his opinion about a potential need to change the constitutional system in the Russian Federation, including through violence," the source said.

The inquiry is underway in accordance with the article "public calls for extremist activity using the media" of the Russian Criminal Code, he said.

At the same time, the source views the chance of opening a criminal case as unlikely.

"The remarks only expressed a probability. Experts will have difficulty recognizing them as an appeal," the source said.

Interfax does not yet have official confirmation of the report.

The relevant article of the Russian Criminal Code carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.
