Russia's Black Sea Fleet reveals size of Mediterranean squadron

MOSCOW. Dec 2 (Interfax) - The Russian squadron in the Mediterranean Sea numbers over ten ships, some of which are armed with Kalibr cruise missiles, the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet said in a statement on Tuesday.

"At present, the Black Sea Fleet has more than ten ships and support vessels in the Mediterranean Sea, including the Admiral Essen frigate and the Vyshny Volochyok small missile ship," the statement said.

Yesterday, the fleet reported that the Ingushetia small missile ship had left the squadron.

On Tuesday, the Baltic Fleet's press service said that floating workshop PM-82 was on its way to the Mediterranean to ensure the technical readiness of the squadron's ships and submarines.

The Russian squadron is located in the Mediterranean Sea on a permanent basis. Its frigates and diesel submarines have repeatedly delivered strikes on militants in Syria using Kalibr missiles (Almaz-Antey).

Russia has a Mediterranean naval facility at the Syrian port of Tartus. On September 30, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the facility was ready to take in dozens of warships. "All moorage sites are equipped with life-sustaining systems, offloading facilities, and a repair system for servicing and carrying out minor repairs on ships and vessels," Shoigu said at the time.
