Cyprus extradites to Russia former adviser to Rosrybolovstvo administration Khokhlov charged with fraud worth $7 mln

MOSCOW. Dec 7 (Interfax) - Yury Khokhlov, former adviser to the head of the Federal Agency for Fishery (Rosrybolovstvo), has been extradited to Russia from Cyprus, Russian Prosecutor General's Office spokesman Andrei Ivanov told reporters.

"The relevant bodies of the Republic of Cyprus have extradited to Russia Yury Khokhlov, former adviser to the head of the Federal Agency for Fishery, at the request of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation," Ivanov said.

Khokhlov is charged with attempted fraud, he said.

According to investigators, no later than April 2016, Khokhlov, acting by previous concert with other people, convinced the aggrieved party to give him and his accomplices money in the amount of $7 million under the pretext of organizing employment to a top position in the Federal Agency for Fishery.

In actual fact, Khokhlov had no intention of fulfilling his promise, Ivanov said.

"Khokhlov could not fulfil his criminal intention because of circumstances outside his control. After part of the money, $300,000, was passed to the accomplices, the perpetrators were detained by Federal Security Service officials," the Prosecutor General's Office spokesman said.

Khokhlov managed to hide from law enforcement bodies and was put on the wanted list. "He was detained on the territory of Cyprus in October 2018. After that, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office sent its foreign colleagues a request for the extradition of the accused, which was granted," Ivanov said.
