Arrest of Russian citizen accused of espionage in Denmark resembles 'witch-hunt' - Russian Foreign Ministry (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Dec 9 (Interfax) - The accusations of espionage against a Russian citizen in Denmark are unfounded, this jeopardizes the work of Russian specialists in that country, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Wednesday.

"He has been provided with a lawyer. He pleads not guilty," she said in her commentary published on the Russian Foreign Ministry website, noting that the Foreign Ministry is keeping the situation under control.

"We regard the arrest and the ongoing trial as another round of anti-Russian hysteria on the part of Copenhagen. Such unsubstantiated accusations are reminiscent of a 'witch hunt,' thereby endangering the activities of Russian specialists in Denmark," Zakharova said.

"Since the arrest of the Russian citizen, employees of the consular department of the Russian embassy to Denmark have been providing him with the necessary assistance, repeatedly visiting him in a detention facility, and assisting in establishing contact with his family," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.

"We hope that justice will prevail with all the biased nature of the accusations against our compatriot," she said.
