MINSK. Dec 14 (Interfax) - More than 300 people were detained during mass protests in Minsk on Sunday, the Minsk Executive Committee's police department said in a statement on its website.
"Over 300 people were detained for violating the law on mass events in Minsk," the police department said.
The detentions were carried out in accordance with the articles of the Belarusian Code of Administrative Offenses for violating the rules for arranging or holding mass events, as well as for disobeying the lawful demands of law enforcement officers, it said.
The number of participants in the protests in Minsk did not exceed 800 on Sunday, the police department said. "In various districts of the capital, groups of people gathered, and their total number did not exceed 800 who designated themselves with unregistered symbols," the police department said.
The participants in unauthorized events were repeatedly warned about the inadmissibility of illegal actions, it said. "Those who did not respond to demands and the most active citizens were detained," the police said.
"Law enforcement officers are continuing to identify people who previously took part [in public actions] and were not detained at the time of these mass events," the police department added.
