MINSK. Dec 14 (Interfax) - As many as 271 people were detained after Sunday's protests in Belarus and are pending trial, the Interior Ministry.
"In all, 271 people were detained across the country yesterday for violating the law on mass events and were put in detention facilities until courts hear their cases opened on administrative offenses," according to a statement published on the Belarusian Interior Ministry's website on Monday.
Protest activity continues to decline in the country, the ministry said.
"Turnout at these unauthorized protests stood at some 1,000 people across the country," it said.
"The 'largest' protest was staged in Minsk. Protesters gathered in groups of 50 at the most in different districts of the capital. The police repeatedly warned them of the unacceptability of violating the law on mass events. The most aggressive protesters were detained," it said.
The ministry also offered its comment on a video and information published by some online resources that a teenager was allegedly detained near Gazety Pravda Avenue and that a person running across Golubev Street was hit by a car.
"We have not confirmed this information," it said.
Unlawful acts continue to be reported at Belarusian transport infrastructure facilities, the ministry said. For instance, unknown persons scattered nails and self-drilling screws across a road in the city of Brest, and a bomb mockup was found on rail tracks in the Smolevichi district, causing a train to stop.
Since August 9, Belarus has seen continuous protests against the official results of the presidential election. The authorities declared the incumbent head of state, Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in office since 1994, the winner.
