MOSCOW. Jan 17 (Interfax) - Opposition activist Alexei Navalny, who arrived in Russia from Germany on Sunday, was detained for evading appearance at the criminal executive inspectorate as a convict under his suspended sentence, the press bureau of the Moscow branch of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) said.
"On January 17, at the Sheremetyevo Airport, officers of the search department of the operative directorate of the Federal Penitentiary Service for Moscow detained Alexei Navalny, who has been given a suspended sentence and who has been on the wanted list since December 29, 2020 for repeat violations of his probation period," the press bureau said in a statement obtained by Interfax on Sunday.
The department said that the further measure of restraint for Navalny would be determined by the court.
"He will be in custody until a court ruling," the statement said.
"The detention of citizen Navalny was carried out based on a ruling issued on December 29, 2020 by the head of the Moscow branch of the Federal Penitentiary Service, according to which the convict was put on the wanted list for systematic violations of the conditions of his probation term with an order to take measures to detain him when his whereabouts are established," it said.
