Three hundred Russian military police officers posted to northeastern Syria as observation posts' reinforcement

QAMISHLI, Syria. Jan 18 (Interfax) - Russian military police have deployed additional units to Syria's al-Hasakah province as a reinforcement of observation posts operated jointly with the Syrian government forces.

In all, about 300 servicemen will additionally be stationed at the observation posts, Russian-Syrian observation post commander Maj. Dmitry Suntsov told the press.

"Our unit has been deployed to one of the joint observation posts in the al-Hasakah province. The primary objective is to promote de-escalation of the conflict in the region. Our servicemen are monitoring the ceasefire implementation and are rendering comprehensive assistance to the local population," Suntsov said.

Military police units are stationed at observation posts in the al-Hasakah province in northeastern Syria, which borders Turkey, consistent with Russian-Turkish agreements on the stabilization in the region.

In late December, Russian servicemen were posted to the observation post in Ayn Issa, where Syrian forces had been repeatedly shelled and even attacked by illegal armed groups. That activity became less intensive following the deployment of joint forces at the observation post.

The first reinforcement unit has arrived in the al-Hasakah province. The deployment of a number of similar units will follow in the near future. These are the best trained servicemen, who have accomplished various kinds of missions in Syria before.

They will be stationed at observation posts in Ayn Issa, Tell Tamer, Amuda, and other populated localities. A military transport plane has delivered additional weapons, communication and navigation systems, and other hardware the Russian military might need to the region.
