MOSCOW. Jan 19 (Interfax) - The Basmanny Court of Moscow has ruled in favor of the investigator's motion, extending the custodial term for former deputy director of Russia's Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) Valery Maximenko in a case opened into abuse of office, the court's press service told Interfax.
"In accordance with the court ruling, Valery Maximenko's custodial term has been extended until April 25, 2021," the press service said.
Maximenko was detained in late November and faces charges of abuse of office.
According to investigators, in 2018, Maximenko unlawfully organized the conclusion of government construction and renovation contracts under the federal target program "Development of the Penitentiary System (2018-2026)" between territorial branches of the Federal Penitentiary Service and the FSIN federal state unitary enterprise "Construction Company for the North Caucasus Federal District." In the opinion of investigators, it was known that the company did not possess the relevant building capacities or workforce to fulfill the contract.
As a result of Maximenko's actions, the federal target program for 2018-2019 was not fulfilled in an amount exceeding 2.1 billion rubles, 14 penitentiary facilities were not commissioned, and the unitary enterprise lost over 189 million rubles in construction costs and fines for the late fulfillment of government contracts.
Maximenko has pleaded not guilty.
