Navalny transported to Matrosskaya Tishina jail - Public Monitoring Commission

MOSCOW. Jan 19 (Interfax) - Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny, who has been remanded in pre-trial custody for 30 days, will be held in a special unit of the Matrosskaya Tishina detention facility, executive secretary of Moscow's Public Monitoring Commission Alexei Melnikov told Interfax.

"Alexei Anatolyevich Navalny arrived at the Matrosskaya Tishina federal detention center shortly after 8:00 p.m. yesterday. Navalny told members of the Public Monitoring Commission that employees of the facility did not exert any moral or physical pressure on him," Melnikov said.

At the moment, Navalny is being held in a three-person quarantine-type cell. He is in the cell alone.

At the detention facility, Navalny was provided with beddings, necessary utensils, and a hygiene kit, Melnikov said.

"He also asked that a list of the items he needs be passed to his relatives. The commission's members will inform his relatives about it," he said.

Navalny's cell is equipped with a fridge, an electric kettle, and a TV set. It also has a hot water tap.

"The members of the Public Monitoring Commission explained to Alexei Anatolyevich that he can use FSIN-Pismo [an application for sending messages and pictures to inmates held in custody] and can order necessary food and other items from the remand facility's shop either himself or through his relatives," Melnikov said.

The Khimki City Court outside of Moscow ordered at a hearing at a local police station on Monday that Navalny be taken into pretrial custody until February 15.

Navalny was detained at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport on Sunday upon returning from Germany, where he was undergoing medical treatment and convalescing for about five months.

Russia's Federal Penitentiary Service [FSIN] put Navalny on the wanted list on December 29, 2020, over a violation of the terms of his parole in the so-called Yves Rocher case.
