Russia won't listen to Western calls for Navalny's release, this is internal affair - Peskov

MOSCOW. Jan 19 (Interfax) - The Kremlin will not listen to the calls of Western countries for the release of arrested opposition activist Alexei Navalny, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Journalists reminded Peskov at a press briefing on Tuesday that representatives of numerous Western countries had demanded that Russia immediately release the arrested Navalny, some had called for imposing additional sanctions on Russia, and Amnesty International described the opposition activist as "a prisoner of conscience" and asked Peskov to comment on those events.

"We can hear these statements but in this case we cannot and are not going to take these statements into consideration. This is a fact of violation of a Russian law by a Russian citizen, this is a completely internal affair, and we will not allow anyone to interfere. We have no intention to listen to such statements," Peskov said.
