MOSCOW. Jan 19 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin does not intend to closely monitor the observance of opposition activist Alexei Navalny's rights during his trial, as this is the duty of the country's relevant oversight agencies, presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.
Journalists asked Peskov on Tuesday whether the president, as the guarantor of the constitution, will keep a close eye on the observance of Navalny's rights during the court proceedings amid the great attention of other countries and a large number of people in Russia to the Navalny situation.
"This is not a situation that requires special attention from the president," he said.
"The rights of all citizens of the Russian Federation are guaranteed by the laws of the Russian Federation, the oversight authorities of the Russian Federation," Peskov said.
"Of course, it will be the same in this case as well," he said.
"As regards your phrase that we are heeding some international opinion, etc., I'd like to repeat once again that we have no intention to listen to this international opinion in this case," Peskov said.
