Hizb ut-Tahrir cell busted in Russia's Kaluga region - FSB

MOSCOW. Jan 27 (Interfax) - Russian security services in the Kaluga region have detained members of the Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami terrorist organization, banned in Russia, who have been engaged in recruiting Muslims to the group and spreading extremist ideology, the press center of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Wednesday.

"Officers of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation together with the Federal National Guard Service of the Russian Federation dismantled the activities of a unit of the Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami international terrorist organization [outlawed in Russia by a Supreme Court ruling in 2003] in the Kaluga region," the press center said.

Members of the cell have been engaged in anti-constitutional activity in line with the doctrine seeking to establish a so-called worldwide caliphate and aimed at undermining civil society institutions and overthrowing the country's authorities by violent methods.

"During their secret meetings, they advertised the terrorist ideology among residents of the region and recruited local Muslims to their group," the press center said without disclosing exactly how many cell members have been detained.
