Western Military District begins exercises in 6 Russian regions

MOSCOW. Jan 28 (Interfax) - Over 3,500 servicemen from formations and military units of the combined-arms army stationed in the Voronezh, Belgorod, Bryansk, Smolensk, Kursk and Moscow regions are taking part in exercises in six regions of Russia, the Western Military District said in a statement on Thursday.

"More than 3,500 servicemen are taking part in the exercises in six regions of Russia," the statement said.

In addition, the exercises involve over 600 pieces of weapons and military and special hardware, among them Iskander-M missile systems, artillery systems, and armored vehicles, the staff of the Western Military District said.

The staff noted it was a scheduled exercise.

The exercise began with "the crews checking notification alerts, combat vehicles departing from military motor pools for designated area, and deployment to military ranges for practicing defensive operations," it said.

"Sustenance at halts and stopovers, deterrence of mock enemy attacks, and land navigation are being trained in the course of deployment," the statement said.
