MOSCOW. Jan 28 (Interfax) - The Russian authorities hope that Internet and social media platforms will not become places for spreading calls for people to take part in unauthorized rallies, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said, adding that all violations committed by them may be prosecuted.
"On the whole, as a state, of course we'd rather they did not become a platform for announcements of such illegal actions and did not offer their space for promoting such ideas," Peskov told reporters on Thursday when commenting on reports that warnings had been issued to a whole range of Internet platforms and social media networks.
The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) played a proactive role in this issue, urging different social media networks not to become a platform for such calls, he said.
"Accordingly, the Prosecutor's Office is also reacting. It is totally explicable," Peskov said.
When asked whether it was true that large social media networks such as Facebook, TikTok, Twitter, Mail.ru Group, and Google had received such warnings, Peskov said, "It is these networks that become the main such platforms. Therefore, they have been warned. It is quite natural and quite normal."
The relevant oversight authorities will decide whether these or those measures should be taken in regard to these online resources, he said.
"Naturally, they will weigh the pros and cons, and measures will be taken in accordance with the law if need be... Of course, extreme violations of the law, should they take place, will require an appropriate reaction," Peskov said, upon being asked what liability these online resources might face.
