Three criminal cases opened against participants in Jan 23 protest in Russia's Krasnoyarsk

KRASNOYARSK. Feb 2 (Interfax) - Three participants in an unsanctioned rally which took place in Krasnoyarsk on January 23 have been identified as defendants in criminal cases, the press service for the territorial prosecutor's office said on Monday.

One of these Krasnoyarsk protesters has been repeatedly brought to administrative liability for violating the rules for organizing and holding rallies and demonstrations, and he took part in the unsanctioned rally in Krasnoyarsk on January 23.

A criminal case has been opened against him under Article 212.1 of the Russian Criminal Code for a repeat violation of the established rules for organizing or holding a gathering, rally, demonstration, procession, or picket.

Another participant in the same rally on January 23 threw a bottle at a police officer of the territorial police department. He has been identified as a defendant in a case concerning the use of violence against an officer of law enforcement. Investigators have filed a motion for the arrest of the two rally participants, which was supported by the prosecutor's office.

Another criminal case on charges of the use of violence against a law enforcement officer was opened against a resident of the village of Yemelyanovo, who pepper-sprayed a police officer in the face during the unsanctioned rally.

As previously reported, law enforcement officers detained a 23-year-old Krasnoyarsk resident who is suspected of attacking a police officer during an unsanctioned rally in support of opposition activist Alexei Navalny on January 23. He threw a bottle at a police officer's head. He later apologized.

Unsanctioned rallies and marches took place in Krasnoyarsk on January 23 and January 31.
