MOSCOW. Feb 9 (Interfax) - An air defense crew of the Russian Black Sea Fleet's frigate Admiral Essen has practiced the protection of a naval base from a massive missile strike of a mock enemy, the fleet press service said in a statement on Tuesday.
"In the course of the training, the frigate's air defense crew locked and destroyed the mock enemy's aircraft with an air defense missile weapon, which is designed to protect the ship from any kind of air attack means," the fleet press service said.
Consistent with the exercise scenario, the Black Sea Fleet's control center received information about the takeoff of the mock enemy's aircraft towards the Crimean Peninsula. Air defense of the Admiral Essen frigate was put on alert, and all fleet forces were alerted so as to achieve effective distribution of tasks as the mock enemy's aircraft were approaching.
The targets were imitated on computers of the ships' weapon control systems and "destroyed" before they took the action course.
The training was part of the plan of Black Sea Fleet combat exercises.
The Admiral Essen frigate is the second ship of Project 11356. Ships of the kind have a displacement of approximately 4,000 tonnes, a top speed of 30 knots, and sea endurance of 30 days. They are armed with Kalibr-NK cruise missiles, a Shtil-1 air defense missile complex, a 100mm A-190 artillery system, air defense artillery, a rocket launcher and torpedoes, and are capable of carrying a Kamov Ka-27 shipborne helicopter (or Ka-31).
