Russian air defense crews deter overnight cruise missile strike of mock enemy during exercise in Tajikistan

YEKATERINBURG. Feb 11 (Interfax) - Russian crews of an S-300PS air defense missile system battalion stationed in Tajikistan have deterred a simulated overnight cruise missile strike at the sites of Russia's 201st military base, the Central Military District press service said on Thursday.

The detection of high-speed targets of the mock enemy was practiced in the course of a tactical drill of the protection of the Central Asian airspace.

"The servicemen tracked, locked, and performed computer-simulated launches of guided air defense missiles at airborne targets imitating modern air attack means of the mock enemy flying from various directions and at various altitudes," the press service said.

The servicemen also practiced reloading of S-300PS missiles and deterring of an attack of mock sabotage-and-reconnaissance group at combat positions.

The S-300PS air defense missile battalion complex is on the trial combat duty at Russia's 201st military base. The system is tasked with protecting sites of the Russian formation from air attack means and to provide air defense of the Central Asian collective security region.
