Tajikistan, Iran discuss security cooperation

DUSHANBE. Feb 24 (Interfax) - Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli have discussed the current status and prospects of bilateral cooperation in security issues, the Tajik presidential press service said on Wednesday.

The sides underlined at the meeting that the two countries had signed over 160 bilateral cooperation documents, including the memorandum of mutual understanding on the principles and framework of bilateral cooperation in security issues, which laid the legal foundation for such relations.

"The Tajik president emphasized the need for the full implementation of the signed security document, which laid a solid foundation for strengthening cooperation between the police forces of the two countries. The president drew attention of the Iranian side to the importance of the active implementation of the provisions of this document," the press service said.

In addition, the sides exchanged views on pressing aspects of the bolstering of geopolitical competition, as well as on threats and challenges to the modern world and regional security.

Against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, the sides discussed the global financial and economic crisis, which doubtlessly poses a serious threat to the current situation and the future of the region.

The sides exchanged information on the practical steps taken by governments of both countries to fight the pandemic, the press service said.

Other topical global and regional affairs were also addressed at the meeting.
