S-400 air defense missile systems put on combat duty on Sakhalin

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. Feb 24 (Interfax) - S-400 air defense missile systems have been put on combat duty on Sakhalin, the Eastern Military District press service said in a statement on Wednesday.

"S-400 Triumf air defense missile systems have been put on combat duty on the Sakhalin Island. The readiness for combat duty and protection of the Russian airspace has been personally verified by Air Force and Air Defense Army Commander Lieut. Gen. Vladimir Kravchenko," the statement said.

A drill aimed to deter an airstrike of a mock enemy was held to check the readiness of S-400s to accomplish their mission, the press service said.

The crews deployed the systems for combat in due time and tracked down, locked and identified simulated air targets.

"All targets were destroyed as part of [computer-simulated] training missile launches as they entered the kill zone. The commander of the Air Force and Air Defense Army lauded the preparedness of the standby forces of the air defense formation stationed on Sakhalin," the press service said.
