Sullivan to remain U.S. ambassador to Russia (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Feb 25 (Interfax) - U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan will stay in office for an indefinite period in 2021, as proposed by the administration of President Joe Biden.

"Earlier this week, President Biden asked me to remain as the U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Federation for an indefinite period through this year," Sullivan told Interfax.

"Our relationship with Russia, and our friendship with the Russian people, is of great importance, and I am honored to serve my country here," he said.

"I look forward to a time when I can travel through Russia to meet even more people, and to learn even more about this great country," Sullivan said.

Sullivan has been serving as the ambassador to Russia since February 5, 2020.

According to U.S. media outlets, the transition team of U.S. President Joe Biden has asked Sullivan to remain the ambassador until Biden chooses his possible successor.

As a rule, the U.S. ambassadors appointed for political reasons step down when a new administration takes the office. The Bloomberg news agency said that Sullivan belonged to that category. The work of U.S. career diplomats, whose appointments are not political, does not depend on a particular presidential administration.
