Armenian opposition leader Marukyan meets with president to discuss reasons for switching to semi-presidential rule

YEREVAN. March 2 (Interfax) - Edmon Marukyan, the leader of the Armenian opposition parliamentary faction Bright Armenia, has met with President Armen Sarkissian to discuss the domestic political crisis in the country.

"I have just met with the president of Armenia. We've discussed possible ways to overcome the domestic political crisis, early parliamentary elections, and reasonability of switching to a semi-presidential form of governance through constitutional amendments," Marukyan wrote on Facebook.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Monday that early parliamentary elections in Armenia could be held in 2021 if the parliamentary opposition accepted some conditions.

For the parliament to be dissolved, the prime minister is supposed to resign. If the parliament fails to elect a new prime minister twice in a row, the parliament shall be dissolved automatically and new elections shall be called, based on whose results a new majority is supposed to elect a new prime minister.

Pashinyan had earlier invited the parliamentary opposition to sign an agreement under which he would resign and the opposition would not nominate its candidate for prime minister, but the opposition rejected the proposal.
