Lavrov expecting Moscow meeting on Afghanistan to assist in Doha process

DOHA. March 11 (Interfax) - The Moscow meeting on Afghanistan, which is scheduled to take place on March 18, is bound to promote the Doha process, rather than compete with it, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday.

"All of us are genuinely interested in ending the tragedy in Afghanistan as soon as possible. [...] We are not competing with either Qatar or anyone else. And we do not act from the position, which could be viewed as an object of jealousy," Lavrov said at a press conference in Doha.

Before the Doha process for Afghanistan's settlement was launched, there were both the Istanbul process and the Moscow format, he said.

"It did not occur to anyone to reproach our Qatari friends and to claim that somebody was trying to grab the biggest piece of the pie," Lavrov said.

There were lots of outstanding problems in the Doha process, and the issue was discussed during negotiations, he said.

"We would like to help continue these negotiations from a more constructive position, which should be taken by every party involved in this process," Lavrov said.
