Western Military District holding exercises in 6 regions of Russia

MOSCOW. March 11 (Interfax) - Several bilateral command-post exercises, involving units of the 20th all-arms army stationed on the territories of the Smolensk, Voronezh, Kursk, Belgorod, Bryansk, and Moscow regions, will be conducted within a week, the Western Military District said.

"The bilateral command-post exercises of the all-arms army of the Western Military District involve in total more than 3,000 troops and some 500 weapons and pieces of military and special hardware," according to a statement issued on Thursday.

The main purpose of the exercises is "to check the skills of the units' commanders in personnel management using automatic troop command systems and interaction with the units," the statement said.

In particular, the exercise will be aimed at practicing actions in situations of a mock enemy's air attack, the use of reconnaissance capabilities and drones, more than 50 tasks all in all, the Western Military District said.

The 20th all-arms army is considered to be one of the largest units of the Russian Armed Forces. The army is headquartered in Voronezh.
