Ex-Armenian President Ter-Petrosyan's party strongly rejects holding early parliamentary elections under existing Electoral Code

YEREVAN. March 18 (Interfax) - The Armenian National Congress (ANC) party led by the country's first president, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, has not welcomed the decision to hold early parliamentary elections on the basis of the existing Electoral Code of the Republic of Armenia.

The existing electoral code contains multiple risks threatening fair elections, including, in particular, use of administrative levers and bribes, ANC said in a statement on Thursday.

"We strongly reject the decision to hold elections on the basis of this Electoral Code. Without modifying it, the holding of any elections will serve the immediate interests of parties and cause new political crises," the statement said.

ANC has said it is hoping that the parliament will adopt a new electoral code before the elections to ensure that fair elections be held.
