Sanctions leave Venezuela unable to buy medications - Russian Deputy PM Borisov

CARACAS. March 31 (Interfax) - Russia condemns the unilateral sanctions against Venezuela, which have made it impossible for the country to buy medications during the pandemic, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov said.

"Russia strongly condemns the practice of unlawful unilateral sanctions against Venezuela, which are the main cause of the deterioration in the socioeconomic situation of the country's population. They have looked especially cynical during the pandemic, as they limit the government's ability to purchase necessary medications and essentials," Borisov said in Caracas on Tuesday, after a meeting in a wider format of the co-chairs of the intergovernmental high-level commission.

He wished the government success in the fight against coronavirus and swift normalization of the sanitary-epidemiological situation in Venezuela.

The Russian deputy prime minister also expressed satisfaction with the "positive dynamic of our contacts" and noted the "strategic nature of Russian-Venezuelan partnership, which has developed successfully despite external challenges."

"The past few years have been a real test of resilience for Venezuela. We support the efforts of the Venezuelan leadership to defend national sovereignty. Russia is interested in an independent, politically stable, and successfully developing Venezuela," Borisov said.
