MOSCOW. April 1 (Interfax) - The crew of the Admiral Gorshkov frigate of Russia's Northern Fleet has successfully destroyed training targets during an anti-aircraft defense exercise, the fleet's press service said on Thursday.
"The Northern Fleet's Admiral Gorshkov frigate today successfully fired a Poliment-Redut anti-aircraft missile system in the Barents Sea. The ship destroyed two missile targets launched by the Aisberg missile-carrying boat," it said.
The Rassvet missile-carrying boat was monitoring the firing exercise, and four ships of the Kola Flotilla were tasked with blocking the relevant maritime zone to navigation.
"The area in the Barents Sea where the anti-aircraft missile firing was conducted had been declared dangerous and blocked to navigation and flights in advance," it said.
The Admiral Gorshkov put out to sea on March 31, the fleet said. "It is scheduled to return to the fleet's base in Severomorsk after completing its combat training tasks," it said.
The Admiral Gorshkov's crew will be involved in testing hypersonic weapons later this year. At the end of 2020, the frigate conducted several successful firing tests with the Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile.
Poliment-Redut is a new shipborne anti-aircraft missile system developed by the Almaz-Antey aerospace defense concern, which has been installed on Russian new-generation frigates and corvettes.
The Admiral Gorshkov was commissioned for the Russian Navy on July 28, 2018, following several years of trials. It is considered one of the most advanced Russian naval ships. "The Project 22350 frigates are multirole warships capable of efficiently opposing surface, air, and underwater opponents and strike ground- and coast-based targets at a distance of over 1,500 kilometers," the Northern Fleet headquarters said.
