Russian troops to hold Arctic air defense exercise

MOSCOW. April 1 (Interfax) - The Northern Fleet will conduct an air defense exercise which will involve putting the S-300 Favorit air defense system into combat readiness, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Troops from an air defense missile regiment of the Northern Fleet's Air Force and Air Defense Army, armed with the upgraded S-300 Favorit surface-to-air missile systems, will conduct a battalion-level tactical exercise in protecting a critical industrial facility in the Far North against a mock enemy air attack, the ministry said.

The exercise will take place on the Kola Peninsula on April 7.

"The drills will involve practicing putting troops into the highest degrees of combat readiness, marching to the assigned launch area, guard units' operating tactic of repelling an attack by a mock enemy sabotage reconnaissance group, overcoming difficult-to-traverse and nominally contaminated areas, deployment of the S-300 system in a launch area, and nominally shooting an air target via computer simulation," the statement said.

The S-300 is a long-range air defense system designed by the Almaz-Antey aerospace defense concern.
