Russian Defense Ministry to create new electronic warfare network

MOSCOW. April 14 (Interfax) - The Russian military is set to create a new electronic warfare network comprising ground-based and air-based components.

"The Russian Defense Ministry has drafted a document, which lays down the strategy of building and improving Russia's electronic warfare network in the coming period. It is based on results of a detailed analysis of global trends of the development of radio-electronic systems, weapons and military hardware of the leading foreign countries," Russian Radio-Electronic Forces Commander Lieut. General Yury Lastochkin said in an interview with the Russian Defense Ministry's newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda.

"The fulfillment of every measure planned by the document, which has been prepared for adoption, will substantially increase the contribution of the Radio-Electronic Forces in the achievement of supremacy in troop control and operation of weapons. It will allow the creation of a ground-and-air-based electronic warfare network capable of countering the technological advantage of the leading foreign countries in the information and telecom space," Lastochkin said.

"The emergence of the new area of confrontation, the information and telecom space, significantly broadens the range of missions fulfilled by the Radio-Electronic Forces and makes the methods of their engagement crucial for countering plans of potential adversaries in the peace and war time, bringing the effect of modern electronic warfare systems close to the one of precision-guided weapons," he said.

The Radio-Electronic Forces are tasked with conducting electronic reconnaissance and jamming of hostile troop control systems and weapons, protecting friendly control systems from the enemy's interferences, and reducing the efficiency of the enemy's operations by means of individual and mass protection of ground-based facilities.
