MOSCOW. April 14 (Interfax) - A search and attack naval group comprised of the Snezhnogorsk, Brest, and Yunga small anti-submarine ships has conducted an air defense exercise in the Barents Sea, the Northern Fleet said in a statement.
"Small anti-submarine ships of the Cola Flotilla of the Northern Fleet's all-arms force conducted a joint exercise using radio-electronic weapon systems to practice locking in, tracking, and destroying low-flying aerial targets. An Ilyushin Il-38 aircraft of the air force and air defense forces army imitated the aerial target," the fleet's press service said.
This planned exercise was part of a series of preparedness checks upon the completion of the winter training period, it said.
"At the final stage of the exercise, the crews of the small anti-submarine ships fired upon simulated aerial targets with Osa-MA anti-aircraft missile systems, AK-176 artillery systems, and 30mm AK-630 quick-firing artillery systems," it said.
The Brest, the Yunga, and the Snezhnogorsk belong to the Project 1124m Albatros class of vessels. They are designed to hunt for, track, and destroy submarines in offshore and coastal marine zones.
