MOSCOW. April 16 (Interfax) - Northern Fleet hydrographers have found debris of a Soviet K-type submarine, which hit a German mine during WWII, on the bed of the Barents Sea, the fleet press service said.
"The Elbrus multifunctional support vessel conducted an instrumental analysis of the seabed relief and confirmed the presence of a K-type submarine (cruise submarine of 14th series) or Katyusha within the perimeter of the German Bantos-A minefield," the press service said.
The seabed examination showed that the submarine hull broke into three pieces and the sub was entangled in fishing nets, it said.
"A visual analysis leads to the conclusion that the submarine hit a German mine, which caused detonation of the sub's ammo," the press service said.
Specialists will try to establish the submarine's tactical number.
The search was conducted by the Elbrus multifunctional support vessel, the Ilya Muromets icebreaker from the support fleet, and the Romuald Muklevich hydrographic ship in the course of a joint expedition of the Northern Fleet and the Russian Geographical Society.
