TCG fails to agree on compromise-based mechanism for verifying Donbas ceasefire - source

MOSCOW. April 29 (Interfax) - Members of the Trilateral Contact Group (TCG) on settling the crisis in eastern Ukraine failed to agree on a compromise-based mechanism to control the ceasefire at a videoconference on Wednesday, a source close to the talks told Interfax.

"Representatives of certain districts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions proposed seven compromise versions of the document for approval, regulating the coordination mechanism for verification and prevention of ceasefire violations, but the Ukrainian side was not satisfied with any of them. A compromise was not reached," he said.

A source in the group organizing the talks told Interfax that the TCG negotiators did not discuss the so-called Easter truce in Donbas in isolation from issues of verifying the ceasefire.

"A new Easter truce or any other truce was not discussed separately. It is necessary to achieve the observance of the previously reached agreements on the ceasefire of July 22, 2020," the source said.

"An agreement on a mechanism for verifying the ceasefire was the main condition for a de facto return to the July 22 agreements," he said.

Earlier, a source in Donbas involved in the talks told Interfax that the Donbas opposing sides could agree on an Easter truce during the TCG videoconference on Wednesday if they agreed on real mechanisms to control the ceasefire.
