MOSCOW. May 13 (Interfax) - Operators of the Iskander-M mobile short-range tactical missile system practiced destroying critical infrastructure of a mock enemy during an exercise in the Kaliningrad region, the Russian Baltic Fleet stated on Thursday.
"Having obtained the coordinates, the Iskander-M crews destroyed mock enemy command-and-control centers and satellite communication stations with practice (electronic) launches of cruise missiles," the statement said.
The crews marched to the assigned area across dirt roads and rugged terrain, overcoming natural obstacles and nominally contaminated areas, and maneuvering in a limited space, the fleet said.
The exercise involved around 100 troops and over 20 units of equipment from the missile brigade of the fleet's army corps.
The Iskander-M missile was developed by the Kolomna-based KB Machinostroyeniya (High Precision Systems). The variant for the Russian army includes two types of missile: ballistic and cruise.
Officially, the Iskander-M were said to have an operating range of up to 500 kilometers. It was reported that the missile can carry a warhead. The missile system entered service in the Ground Forces missile brigades, replacing the Tochka-U tactical ballistic missile system.
