YEREVAN. May 14 (Interfax) - Armenian Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan and his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev have discussed the situation in the Syunik region on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in a phone call on Friday.
"Grigoryan and Patrushev exchanged views on possible ways of solving the problem. The Armenian Security Council secretary said that Yerevan viewed Baku's actions as an encroachment on the Armenian sovereign territory, which is unacceptable to Armenia; therefore, the Azerbaijani forces must leave the area and return to their original positions," the Armenian Security Council press service said.
"The aspirations of the Azerbaijani side are groundless and there are Soviet-era maps proving that the territories invaded by the Azerbaijani forces belong to Armenia," Grigoryan said.
"Grigoryan noted the importance of using the relevant [Collective Security Treaty Organization] CSTO mechanisms for the soonest resolution of the problem," the press service said.
Patrushev lauded Armenia's self-control and said it was necessary to take diplomatic efforts for settling the problem. He also said that Russia was taking intensive efforts towards the soonest resolution of the problem, the press service said.
