Russian military court gives prison terms to extremists from Tatarstan

KAZAN. May 17 (Interfax) - The Central District Military Court in Samara has convicted members of a unit of the Al-Takfir wal-Hijra international extremist organization, banned in Russia, the press service for the Russian Federal Security Service's (FSB) branch for Tatarstan said on Monday.

A defendant identified only by the last name of "Shirinov was found guilty of participation in the activities of an extremist organization (Part 2 of Article 282 of the Russian Criminal Code) and of public calls for terrorist activities spread via the Internet (Part 2 of Article 205.2 of the Russian Criminal Code). [The second defendant] Malakhov was convicted under Part 2 of Article 282.2 of the Russian Criminal Code. They received four years in a standard-security penal colony and three years in a high-security penitentiary, respectively," the press service said.

Earlier, in 2020, a court gave a seven-year term in a high-security penal colony to this unit's ideologist and leader, known only as Zalaldinov.

According to the local branch of the FSB, these three men from Tatarstan planned to commit a series of grave crimes, such as robberies, assaults with intent to rob, and extortion in order to obtain funds to leave for Syria and join an international terrorist organization there.

Five bladed weapons and literature from Russia's federal list of extremist materials were seized during searches.
