Tajik FM, Lavrov discuss preparations for Russian president's visit to Tajikistan

DUSHANBE. May 19 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Tajik counterpart Sirojiddin Muhriddin have discussed preparations for a visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Tajikistan due in September.

"Today's talks put emphasis on preparations for an official visit of the Russian president to Tajikistan, which is scheduled to take place in September. We have agreed to establish continuous contact and close interaction between our foreign ministries in order to add substance to the upcoming visit," the Tajik foreign minister said after the meeting.

The sides are considering 40 economic cooperation documents, which have been prepared for signing, he said.

"The Russian Federation remains a major foreign economic partner of Tajikistan. The trade turnover neared $1 billion last year," Muhriddin said.

The presidents of Tajikistan and Russia agreed at the bilateral meeting in Moscow on May 8-9 that the main result of Putin's visit to Tajikistan should be a qualitative breakthrough in major cooperation areas.

"We will be working on an extensive package of bilateral agreements in the fields of trade and investment," the foreign minister said.

Lavrov is visiting Tajikistan to attend a session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
